Origin and meaning of Jude

Jude is the English form that separates the apostle Judas from the betrayer. It comes from Hebrew יְהוּדָה (Yehudah), probably from the root yadah, “to praise”.

This name exists because of a practical translation problem. The New Testament has two apostles called Judas, and one of them handed Jesus over. English translations solved it by using Jude for the other — the attributed author of the Epistle of Jude — and reserving Judas for Iscariot. Romance languages never made the split.

The root is older and larger. Yehudah is Jacob's fourth son by Leah and the ancestor of the tribe of Judah, from which comes the Kingdom of Judah in southern Israel — and, by extension, the words Jew and Judaism. Genesis 29:35 explains the name by praise.

So Jude, Judah, Judas and Judith are the same stock. English simply created a fork the Latin languages do not have, which is why Jude sounds neutral in English and Judas sounds heavy almost everywhere else.

The modern push came from elsewhere: Hey Jude, by the Beatles, in 1968. Paul McCartney wrote it for Julian Lennon and the original title was Hey Jules. In 2025 Jude ranked 14th in England and Wales.
