The foundation is the Vulgar Latin brought by the Romans, but later invasions left their mark: the Visigoths contributed warrior names like Rodrigo and Fernando, and nearly eight hundred years of Moorish presence left Fátima and dozens of place names that became surnames.
Catholic tradition organized this repertoire for centuries. Children were baptized with saints' names, and compounds with Maria and João dominated the records. Maria still ranks among the most registered names in Portugal and Brazil today.
How they sound
Portuguese has nasal vowels no neighboring language reproduces quite the same way (the ão in João) and a musicality that favors two- or three-syllable names ending in a clear vowel: Duarte, Leonor, Beatriz. The -inho and -inha diminutives are the affectionate side of the language and turn almost any name into a natural nickname.

Are Portuguese and Brazilian names the same thing?
The root is the same, the custom is not. Portugal keeps an official list of spellings allowed for registration, so names vary little. In Brazil registration is free, which opened the door to new spellings. Classics like Beatriz, Miguel and Leonor work well in both countries.
Do Portuguese names work in other languages?
The vowel-ending ones travel well, and many have direct counterparts in Spanish and Italian. The exception is the nasal sounds: João and Conceição are usually adapted outside Portuguese-speaking countries.
