The story behind it is good and little known. In the Book of Tobit, Raphael disguises himself as a man, takes the name Azarias, and accompanies young Tobias on a journey to Media without revealing who he is. At the end, he cures the boy's father of blindness. The angel of healing works incognito — not as an apparition, but as a travelling companion.

He does not appear in the New Testament. Christian tradition sometimes identifies him with the angel mentioned in John 5:4, but that is a later reading, not the text.

The most famous bearer is not religious: Raffaello Sanzio (1483-1520), the Renaissance painter known in English simply as Raphael. The name crossed languages with little deformation — Rafael, Raphaël, Raffaele, Rafał — and the feminine Raphaela followed.
