Origin and meaning of Sofia

Sofia is the Greek word σοφία, “wisdom”. The saint of the same name probably never existed: she came from a misreading of Hagia Sophia, “Holy Wisdom”.

Like Sora in Japanese and Tamar in Hebrew, Sofia is not derived from anything: it is the word. A Greek speaker heard “wisdom” when calling the child, with nothing in between. The spelling without ph is the one used in Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and German.

The curious part is the saint. The story goes that Sophia died of grief after her three daughters were martyred under the emperor Hadrian. The legend most likely arose from a misunderstanding: the basilica in Constantinople is called Hagia Sophia, “Holy Wisdom” — a dedication to a concept, not to a person. Someone read it as a personal name, and the saint appeared.

The name was common among medieval European royalty and reached Britain through the House of Hanover, which took the British throne in the 1700s. In the United States it stayed modest until the 1990s, then surged: it was the top girls' name from 2011 to 2013.

Today it is among the most universal names there are. In 2025 it ranked 5th in the United States and 1st in Germany. Sofia, Sophia and Sophie coexist without hierarchy — the same Greek word in four sets of clothes.
